The Pope Benedict XVI Islam controversy revolves
around a lecture by Pope Benedict XVI titled "Faith,
Reason and the University — Memories and
Reflections" given on 12 September 2006 at the
University of Regensburg in Germany, where he was
previously a professor of theology.
The lecture has been subject to much condemnation,
criticism and subsequent defense by political and
religious authorities. Many Islamic politicians and
religious leaders registered their protest against
what they said was an insulting mischaracterization
of Islam, particularly Pope Benedict's usage of the
quotation.
